NRSWA courses are for Supervisors and Operatives who are required to carry out their duties in-line with the New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA), current legislation, and applicable Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP’s). They are also commonly known as “street works training” or “street works courses”.

The New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) sets out procedures and guidelines for any personnel completing road works in the highway or on footpaths. The Act and associated Codes of Practice cover issues such as, standards for signing, lighting and guarding -Safety at Street Works and Road Works (The Red Book) and the standards required of the reinstatement of all excavations on the highway – Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways (Fourth Edition).

NRSWA Operative Training: Units of competence within the New Roads and Street Works Act

  • Unit LA – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
  • Unit 01 – Signing, lighting and guarding.
  • Unit 02 – Excavation in the highway.
  • Unit 03 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
  • Unit 04 – Reinstatement of sub-base and road base in non-bituminous materials.
  • Unit 05 – Reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials.
  • Unit 08 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.

NRSWA Supervisor Training: Units of competence within the New Roads and Street Works Act

  • Unit LA – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus.
  • Unit S1 – Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding.
  • Unit S2 – Monitoring excavation in the highway.
  • Unit S3 – Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials.
  • Unit S4 – Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and road base in non-bituminous materials.
  • Unit S5 – Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials.
  • Unit S7 – Monitoring reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways.

NRSWA Units LA & 01 (Operatives) and LA & S1 (Supervisor) can be completed as individual, 1-day courses or alternatively, book a 5-day course which covers all Operative or Supervisor units.

Please be aware the NRSWA course is for Assessments not Training Time will be allocated to refresh Learners of the standards but it is advisable to self-study prior to attendance. For a detailed list of relevant documentation, please contact Stuart.
